6 Steps To Overcome Gymtimidation

The First Time I Walked Into this Gym, I Almost Walked Back Out…

Two months ago, I joined a new gym after three months of working out at home. Home workouts were getting a bit too routine, and I just wanted to switch things up a bit...

Don’t get me wrong—you can get amazing results with my workouts and a simple set of dumbbells at home. But let’s be real, it’s also nice to have some eye candy while working out.

I mean, ladies, why else do we go to the gym? #WomenInMaleFields

I joke. I joke.

Anyway, back to the point. I’ve been in and out of gyms for over 10 years, so I thought I’d feel right at home. But to my surprise, as I walked into the new space, I felt… nervous.

This caught me completely off guard. A whole Coach G?

Um... I’m a seasoned fitness coach, and yet there I was, standing by the door with clammy palms. Okay, that’s a tad dramatic, but my stomach did do a little somersault.

So I quickly made my way to a familiar piece of equipment—the treadmill.

But as I stood there warming up, I realized something important: this feeling of intimidation isn’t new. I just hadn’t felt it in a while.

And that’s when it hit me—this is exactly what many of my clients describe when they start a new fitness journey in an unfamiliar gym.

So let me help you fix it, because best believe I walked out of that gym an hour later with my head held high and at least two new gym friends. Yes, I told you I’m friendly!

You don’t have to make friends at the gym, but you certainly don’t have to feel out of place either.

Let’s make it YOUR space.

6 Steps To Overcome Gymtimidation

1) Ask for Help

Gym staff and trainers are literally there to assist you. Don’t hesitate to ask questions—it’s their job to help you feel comfortable. If you’re new to a gym, insist on getting a tour of the facility to familiarize yourself with where all the equipment is. If needed, I’d recommend arriving at least 10 minutes early to scope out the layout before starting your workout.

2) Go at Off-Peak Hours

If you’re really nervous, try going when the gym is less crowded. Peak hours are usually early mornings and evenings. I’d suggest going midday if your schedule allows it. This way, you can ease into the environment and build your confidence before tackling those busier times.

3) Go with a Plan

Duh? Nothing boosts your confidence like knowing exactly what you’re doing with your time at the gym. I customize tailored workout programs for my clients in my app, so they always know what exercise to do next, for how long, and what equipment they’ll need. Whether it’s a printed workout plan or an app, preparation is key. Having a plan saves you from wandering aimlessly and makes your gym time more efficient.

4) Bring Headphones

Music or a great podcast can help drown out distractions and boost your confidence. It will also help you stay focused. Pro tip: People are less likely to disturb you when they see you’ve got headphones in.

5) Wear Clothes You Feel Good In

“Look good, feel good” is not a myth. If you’re someone who needs a fresh outfit or some lip gloss to feel confident at the gym, go for it. Do whatever makes you feel your best. It’s you vs. you, so wear into what genuinely makes you comfortable and confident. Remember, the goal is to keep showing up—so whatever gets you there, do it.

6) Buddy Up

Before I ever walked into a gym solo, I’d go to group classes with friends for years. There’s nothing like having a friend next to you to help you feel confident or distract you from the fact that you’re in a new environment.

Plus, that extra accountability can help you keep showing up. Working out with a friend makes the experience less intimidating and way more fun.

Why Now is the Best Time to Build Your Gym Habit
